The aging of the population and the combination of multiple chronic underlying diseases among the elderly pose severe challenges to the health system. Infectious diseases are seriously harmful to the elderly, and vaccination is the most cost-effective means to prevent infection. This paper mainly reviews and analyzes the health and economic burden caused by influenza virus, Streptococcus pneumoniae and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection on the elderly, as well as the function, effect and vaccination necessity of corresponding vaccines, and puts forward a series of measures and suggestions to promote the vaccination of the elderly. First, enhance the awareness of the elderly and medical staff about diseases and vaccines, and strengthen popular science propaganda; The second is to advocate the coordination of medical prevention and encourage medical staff to issue vaccine health prescriptions for "appropriate age people"; The third is to improve the R&D, production and supply capacity of new vaccines; The fourth is to formulate and develop policies to solve payment barriers and improve the convenience of vaccination. Through comprehensive measures to increase the vaccination rate, reduce the risk of infectious diseases and related complications, improve the health level and quality of life of the elderly, reduce the economic burden on society and families, reduce the load of medical resources, and help the Healthy China Action.
Renal transplantation is the most effective method for treating end-stage renal disease, but it still faces many difficult problems, among which transplant rejection and infection after transplantation are still the most important factors affecting the survival of renal transplantation recipients. The immune system plays a crucial role in both transplant rejection and transplant infection, but the related mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. The development of single cell sequencing technology provides an effective technical method for analyzing the complex immune regulatory network in the process of transplant rejection and infection, and will promote a more comprehensive and deep understanding of the mechanism of transplant immune response and transplant infection.
In 1999, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Association for the Prevention of Blindness launched the Vision 2020 initiative; In the same year, our country solemnly committed to participating in and actively promoting the action initiative; By 2020, our country has made remarkable progress towards achieving the goals of the Initiative. In 2019, WHO officially certified that my country has eliminated blinding trachoma; In 2017, the number of cataract operations per million people in China reached 2,205, about 7 times that of 1999; Remarkable progress has been made in children's blindness prevention, and myopia prevention and control has been upgraded to a national strategy. The annual coverage rate of eye care and vision examination for children aged 0~6 reaches more than 90%; Low vision rehabilitation is included in the work priority of China Disabled Persons' Federation. Epidemiological surveys in 2006 and 2014 show that the prevalence of visual impairment and blindness in China has decreased by more than 25% in eight years, and it can be estimated that the goals of Universal Eye Health: 2014-2019 Global Action Plan have been basically achieved.
To investigate the diagnostic accuracy and efficiency of an artificial intelligence (AI) triaging model in a diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening program.
A DR screening program was conducted in Kashi City and Kizilsu Kirghiz Autonomous Prefecture of the Xinjiang Uyur Autonomous Region from May to July 2018, and 8 005 patients with diabetes mellitus were included. Fundus images, one centered at optic disc and one centered at macula, were taken for both eyes. A previously validated AI algorithm was applied as the first step to identify the patients with all 4 images. If the images were classified as gradable and negative DR, an AI-generated report was immediately provided without sending to manual grading, and 1/3 of these patients were randomly sampled for manual grading and quality control (group A). For the patients with at least one image classified as ungradable or positive for any DR, all images were sent for manual grading (group B). Finally, 300 patients were randomly selected from group A and group B respectively for accuracy assessment, where the patients and their images were classified by a specialist panel for referral DR (pre-proliferative DR, or proliferative DR, and/or diabetic macular edema).
Among 8 005 patients for DR screening [including 3 220 males and 4 785 females, aged (58.3±10.6) years], after AI triaging, 5 267 (65.8%) potentially received reports from AI system and 2 738 (34.2%) required manual grading. In group A, the accuracy and specificity of AI classification and manual grading on referral DR were all 100%. In group B, the accuracy of AI and manual grading were 75.8% and 90.3%, respectively, while the sensitivity of AI and manual grading was 100% and 79.1%, respectively.
AI alleviates 60% of the workload of manual grading without missing any referral patients with the aid of the current AI triaging model.
To explore the prevalence and risk factors of common blinding ocular diseases in the population aged 30 years and above in rural areas of Handan City from 2006 to 2012.
A cohort study with 6 830 subjects from rural areas of Handan City, Hebei Province was designed and conducted. The follow-up duration was 6 years, and the prevalence and incidence of common blinding diseases were evaluated. Logistic regression was used to explore the influencing factors of common blinding ocular diseases.
In 2006, 6 830 people participated in the baseline survey. There were 3 163 (46.31%) males and 3 667 (53.69%) females. The average age was (52.3±12.2) years (range, 30 to 97 years). There were 3 435 subjects who had common chronic systematic diseases, with a prevalence of 50.29%. In addition, 1 250 people suffered from common blinding ocular diseases, and the prevalence was 18.30%. There were 4 118 subjects without common blinding ocular diseases at baseline who participated in the six-year follow-up, during the 6-year follow-up, 247 participants developed common blinding ocular diseases. 9% (171/1 899) of patients with chronic systematic diseases developed common blinding ocular diseases, while only 3.42% (76/2 219) of normal subjects developed common blinding ocular diseases, with a statistically significant difference (χ2=56.504, P<0.001). The incidence of common blinding ocular diseases was age-dependent. Multivariate regression analysis showed that age (OR=1.045, 95%CI: 1.028-1.062, P<0.001), intraoccular pressure (IOP) (OR=1.064, 95% CI: 1.014-1.116, P=0.011) and baseline chronic diseases (OR=1.749, 95% CI: 1.288-2.375, P<0.001) were risk factors for common blinding ocular diseases. Moreover, the contribution of age, IOP and chronic systematic diseases to the model was 0.436, 0.084 and 0.511, respectively.
The prevalence of common blinding ocular diseases among people over 30 years old in Handan is relatively high. From 2006 to 2012, about 1.5% patients of chronic systematic diseases developed common blinding ocular diseases each year. Moreover, chronic systematic diseases increase the risk of blinding ocular diseases sharply, and the effect is stronger than age and intraocular pressure.
To analyze and summarize the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in China, and provide scientific evidence for its prevention and intervention.
Literature search of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Wanfangdata, Vip and CNKI between 1990 and 2020 was performed to retrieve epidemiological studies of DR in China. The total prevalence of DR was analyzed by performing a meta-analysis, and the prevalences of DR in different regions and age groups were also evaluated by subgroup analyses.
A total of 40 studies were enrolled. The total sample size of the general population was 282 620, and the total number of diabetic patients was 47 022. The prevalence of DR in the general population and diabetic patients was 1.7% (95%CI: 1.4%-2.0%) and 22.4% (95% CI: 18.8%-26.1%), respectively. The highest prevalence of DR was found in patients aged 50-59 years (22.1%). Among the diabetic population, the prevalence of DR was high in North (27.7%) and Northeast China (23.7%), but the East China had the largest estimated number of DR patients (4 971 000). Moreover, the prevalence of DR in rural areas (34.0%) was higher than that in urban areas (18.7%).
The prevalence of DR is high in Chinese diabetic population, and there are differences among regions and age subgroups. The results of the current meta-analysis emphasize the necessity of DR screening for diabetic population, especially in rural areas.
To investigate the clinical effect of ipsilateral simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplantation (SPK).
A total of 146 cases of SPK surgeries completed in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University from September 2016 to June 2020 were selected to summarize the outcome, curative effect and complications of the operation.
The patients were followed up for 1 to 45 months. Good clinical results were obtained in 146 patients. Renal function indicators suggest that on the 7th day after operation, the serum creatinine returned to normal level [142.4 (108.6, 213.4)μmol/L]. The index of pancreatic function decreased to the normal level as expected. The level of blood amylase was 160.5(109.3, 249.8) U/L within 7 days after operation, and then decreased. The trend of urinary amylase was similar to that of blood amylase, which was 240(121.0, 370.0) U/L 7 days after operation, and glycosylated hemoglobin decreased to the normal level (5.8%±1.4%) 1 month after operation. The main medical complications were infection including pulmonary infection (26.03%, 38/146), urinary tract infection (26.03%,38/146), and abdominal infection (4.79%,7/146), acute rejection including renal graft rejection (5.8%,8/146), pancreas/duodenum rejection (18.49%,27/146), and renal graft combined pancreatic graft rejeciton (6.85%,10/146), as well as gastrointestinal bleeding (30.82%,45/146), of which 5 cases were severe bleeding (3.42%, 5/146). The main surgical complications were poor incision healing (10.27%, 15/146), serious surgical complications including arteriovenous thrombosis of the transplanted pancreas (2.05%, 3/146) and intestinal leakage (0.68%,1/146). The 1-year and 3-year patient, renal and pancreatic survival rates were both 92.5%, 91.5% and 89.5%, respectively, and despite the death, the 1-year, 3-year transplanted kidney survival rate was both 99.3%, and 95% for the the 1-year, 3-year pancreas survival rate.
Strict preoperative evaluation of the function of large organs, reasonable surgical methods, perioperative anticoagulation, and prompt diagnosis of complications can achieve good clinical results for patients with SPK.
To compare the infection of BK virus in the recipients of living donor(LD) kidney transplant and deceased donor(DD) kidney transplant.
A total of 911 recipients who underwent kidney transplantation in the Organ Transplantation Research Institute of the 8th Medical Center of the People′s Liberation Army General Hospital from January 2015 to August 2019 were enrolled in this study. The DNA copies of BK virus in urine and peripheral blood of kidney transplant recipients were detected by real-time quantitative PCR. The patients were divided into LD group (n=255) and DD group (n=656). BK virus infection in recipients with DD kidney transplant were compared with that in recipients of LD kidney transplant.
The BK virus positive rate in the urine of all subjects was 13.06%(119/911), and that in blood was 2.96% (27/911). The positive rate of BK virus in urine after kidney transplantation was significantly higher than that in blood(P<0.000 1). The positive rate in urine was 9.02% (23/255) in LD group, which was significantly lower than that of 14.63% (96/656) in DD group in the same period (χ2=5.097, P=0.012); The positive rate of BK virus infection in relatives group was 0.78% (2/255), which was significantly lower than that of 3.81% (25/656) in DD group (χ2=5.849, P=0.007).
There was a significant difference in the infection rate of BK virus between the LD and DD group. The incidence of BK virus infection in kidney transplant recipients from DD was higher than that of from LD kidney transplant recipients.
To investigate the role and regulation mechanism of X box binding protein 1 (XBP1) for hypoxia/reoxygenation(H/R) injury in mouse renal tubular epithelial cells (TCMK-1) through thioredoxin interacting protein (TXNIP)-nucleotide-binding domain (NOD)-like receptor protein (TXNIP-NLRP3) signaling pathway.
The cells were divided into 4 groups: si-NC group transfected with negative control siRNA (si-NC), si-XBP1 group transfected with siRNA targeting XBP1 (si-XBP1), si-NC+H/R group transfected with si-NC and exposed to H/R, and si-XBP1+H/R group transfected with si-XBP1 and exposed to H/R. The Annexin Ⅴ/PI double-staining method was used to detect cell apoptosis; The mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) was determined by using JC-1 dye; The mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mROS) was assessed by using MitoSOX™ dye. The interference efficiency of XBP1 was tested by Western blotting and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. The expression levels of TXNIP, NLRP3 and IL-1β protein were detected by Western blotting. The colocalization of mitochondria and TXNIP was detected by double-labeling immunofluorescent staining. The intergroup difference was compared by using an independent samplest-test.
Compared with the si-NC group, more mROS, apoptosis and lower MMP were observed in si-NC+H/R group. Compared with the si-NC+H/R group, less apoptosis (12.08±0.51 vs 19.01±1.80, P<0.05), mROS (34.63±0.64 vs 48.17±1.84, P<0.01) and higher MMP (1.03±0.11 vs 0.45±0.08, P<0.05) were observed in si-XBP1+H/R group. Down-regulation of XBP1U (protein: 1.31±0.18 vs 0.23±0.02, P<0.01; mRNA: 1.12±0.07 vs 0.38±0.01, P<0.001) and XBP1S (protein: 1.13±0.17 vs 0.28±0.07, P<0.01; mRNA: 8.39±0.63 vs 2.45±0.22, P<0.001) inhibited expression of TXNIP (0.15±0.02 vs 0.04±0.01, P<0.01), NLRP3 (1.13±0.12 vs 0.51±0.12, P<0.05) and IL-1β (1.02±0.04 vs 0.19±0.06,P<0.001) during H/R. Meanwhile, TXNIP exhibited significantly much less colocalization with mitochondria in the si-XBP1+H/R group.
Supression of XBP1 expression can effectively alleviate H/R-induced TCMK-1 cells injury, whose mechanism may be inhibition of TXNIP-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation.
To apply artificial intelligence technology in clinical real-world data of patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma, explore the precise treatment of disease and build up artificial intelligence-based clinical decision support system.
A total of 5 642 patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma admitted to West China Hospital from July 2004 to June 2016 with complete follow-up records were included in the study. A merged model composed of multiple sub-classifiers was adopted to calculate therapy recommendation coefficient, and receiver operator characteristic curve was analyzed. Survival risk and recurrence risk were predicted by DeepSurv algorithm, and Kaplan-Meier survival curves were further compared among low, middle and high risk groups. Siamese-Net was applied to find similar patients.
The Top-1 and Top-2 accuracy of therapy recommendation coefficient reached 82.36% and 94.13% respectively. In internal verification of West China Hospital, the above-mentioned value reached 95.10% in accordance with multi-disciplinary team results. The C-index derived from survival risk model was 0.735 (95%CI:0.70-0.77), and the difference of Kaplan-Meier in pairwise comparison was of statistical significance under log-rank test (P<0.001). Meanwhile, the C-index derived from recurrence risk model was 0.705 (95%CI:0.68-0.73), and the difference of Kaplan-Meier in pairwise comparison was of statistical significance under log-rank test (P<0.001).
The artificial intelligence-based clinical decision support system for primary hepatocellular carcinoma has can accurately make therapy recommendation and prognosis prediction for primary hepatocellular carcinoma.
To find the possible targets for the study and treatment of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), and to analyze and predict the key genes affecting the prognosis of TNBC by bioinformatics.
Raw data on transcriptome sequencing of clinical specimens from patients with TNBC were searched by searching GEO Datasets in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database. The differential gene was then submitted to the Enrichr website for pathway enrichment. Survival analysis was used to finally identify the most significant differences in the prognosis of patients with TNBC.
Only ADAM9 gene showed a significant correlation with the poor prognosis of patients with TNBC (P<0.05), and ADAM9 only showed specificity associated with prognosis in patients with TNBC, and was not with other breast cancer types.
ADAM9 gene has been proved to be related to the poor prognosis in patients with TNBC. Therefore, ADAM9 gene can be regarded as a possible key gene leading to lymph node metastasis and poor prognosis in patients with TNBC.
To investigate the effects of down-regulation of expression of neuropilin-2 (NRP-2) by RNA interference (RNAi) technique on proliferation and apoptosis of HCT-8 colon cancer cells.
NRP2-siRNA and negative control (NControl)-siRNA were transferred into HCT-8 colon cancer cells by liposomes (lip2000) as transfection group and negative control group, and phosphate buffered solution (PBS) was added as blank control group. Quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR) and Western blot were used to detect the transfection effect. The proliferation of cells in the three groups was examined by cell counting kit (CCK) assay, colony-forming unit assay and Ki-67 protein staining assay, respectively. Moreover, the apoptosis of cells in the three groups was determined by acridine orange/propranidine iodide (AO/PI) staining method.
The results of RT-qPCR and Western blot showed that the relative expression of NRP-2 mRNA and the content of NRP-2 protein in the transfer group decreased (0.46±0.05 vs 0.99±0.05 and 1.00±0.06; 1.04±0.06 vs 1.73±0.09 and 1.65±0.11) (all P<0.05). The results of CCK-8 demonstrated that the optical density of transfection group was significantly lower than that of the negative control group and the blank control group(24 h: 0.53±0.04 vs 0.82±0.07 and 0.87±0.07; 48 h: 0.54±0.05 vs 1.00±0.09 and 1.17±0.05; 72 h: 0.75±0.05 vs 1.31±0.13 and 1.50±0.03; 96 h:1.05±0.04 vs 1.46±0.09 and 1.86±0.06) (all P<0.05). The results of colony-forming unit assay indicated that the proliferation ability of the cells in the transfer group was significantly lower than that in the other two groups (134.67±8.74 vs 245.33±19.14 and 300.33±14.01, P<0.05). The results of Ki-67 protein staining assay showed that compared with the negative control group and blank control group, the expression of Ki-67 protein was significantly decreased in the transfection group (5.93±0.22 vs 8.36±0.09 and 8.70±0.21, P<0.05). The results of AO/PI assay revealed that the ratio of apoptotic cells to living cells in the transfer group was significantly higher than that in the other two groups (0.43±0.07 vs 0.14±0.04 and 0.11±0.04, P<0.05).
The proliferation ability of HCT-8 colon cancer cells decreases, and the apoptosis ability increases by decreasing the expression of NRP-2.

Procedure and postoperative outcomes were analyzed, respectively.
A total of 783 relevant literatures were systematically retrieved, and 6 randomized controlled trials, including 954 patients, finally met the inclusion criteria after strict screening. The results of meta-analysis showed that operative time of Billroth Ⅰ was significantly shorter than that of Roux-en-Y (MD=-37.60, 95%CI:-50.79--24.40, P<0.001), intraoperative bleeding (MD=-21.64, 95%CI:-32.20--11.07, P<0.001) and the number of delayed gastric emptying (RR=0.52, 95%CI: 0.31-0.86, P=0.01) of Billroth Ⅰ were both significantly less than those of Roux-en-Y, while bile reflux (RR=8.17, 95%CI: 2.21-31.53, P=0.002) and residual gastritis (RR=1.75, 95%CI:1.43-2.14, P<0.000 01) of Billroth Ⅰ were both significantly higher than those of Roux-en-Y, other outcomes showed no significant difference. Compared with Roux-en-Y, operative time of Billroth Ⅱ was significantly shorter (MD=-19.73, 95%CI:-32.82--6.64, P=0.003), while bile reflux (RR=17.63, 95%CI: 4.50-69.02, P<0.001), residual gastritis (RR=1.94, 95%CI:1.15-3.26, P=0.01) and reflux esophagitis (RR=3.13, 95%CI: 1.31-7.45, P=0.01) of Billroth Ⅱ were all significantly higher, and there was no significant difference in other outcomes.
Compared with Billroth Ⅰ and Billroth Ⅱ, the operation time of Roux-en-Y in gastric cancer patients undergoing distal gastrectomy is longer, but the incidences of bile reflux and residual gastritis are both lower, and the postoperative quality of life seems better.
To systematically review the relationship between dietary patterns and human immunity and health.
Chinese and English search terms, including "dietary pattern", "dietary structure", "nutrients", "food", "protein", "fat", "vitamins", "dietary fiber", "immunity", "inflammatory", "inflammation", "oxidative stress", were searched for relevant articles in PubMed, Web of Science, Wanfang and National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database from the collection start date to January 10, 2020.
A total of 1 Chinese article and 22 English articles were included, including 9 cross-sectional studies, 7 intervention studies, 6 cohort studies and 1 nested case-control study. Common evaluation methods for dietary patterns included dietary inflammatory index (DII), inflammatory score of the diet (ISD), empirical dietary inflammatory pattern (EDIP), dietary compliance score, and healthy eating index. There were 13 studies on Mediterranean dietary patterns and healthy dietary patterns with higher intake of vegetables, fruits, bean products, fish and dairy products in the included articles. The Mediterranean diet can reduce the levels of inflammatory markers such as CRP, IL-6, Hcy, WBC, and fibrinogen, as well as the levels of metabolic indicators such as vascular endothelial growth factor and endothelial function score, improve chronic inflammatory diseases and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. The higher the healthy diet score was, the lower the level of pro-inflammatory factors was. Even if the dietary recommendation was not met, the healthier the diet was, the lower the level of inflammatory factors was. Western dietary patterns were positively correlated with CRP, IL-6, E-selectin, sICAM-1, sVCAM-1 and other inflammatory factors, and can increase the incidence of type 2 diabetes and the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, one study did not found the relationship between them and hs-CRP.
Dietary patterns are closely related to human immune function. Different dietary patterns have different inflammatory potentials according to the characteristics of food intake, which can directly or indirectly affect immune function.
To systematically review the effects of nutrients, food and diet patterns on markers of inflammation and oxidative stress.
Nutrients, nutrition, food, diet, dietary structure, dietary patterns, protein, fat, vitamin, dietary fiber, inflammatory, inflammation, oxidative stress, immunity were used as search terms, and systematic retrieval of the literature in Wanfang Database, National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), PubMed, Web of Science was carried out from the establishment of the database to January 10, 2020, and a systematic review of the literature meeting the requirements was conducted.
A total of 3 Chinese and 46 English articles were included. Literature showed that β-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin D, polyunsaturated fatty acids, some amino acids, dietary fiber, isoflavones, choline, betaine and resveratrol and other nutrients can reduce plasma inflammatory factors or oxidative stress marker levels, and nutrients such as cholesterol and trans fatty acids can increase their levels. Foods such as fish, lean meat, fruits, soybeans, cruciferous vegetables and nuts can reduce plasma inflammatory factors or oxidative stress marker levels, while foods such as milk and sugary beverages can increase plasma inflammatory factors or oxidative stress markers. Mediterranean dietary patterns and other healthy dietary patterns can reduce plasma levels of inflammatory factors or oxidative stress markers, while Western dietary patterns can increase their levels.
Nutrients, food and dietary patterns can influence levels of plasma inflammatory factors or oxidative stress markers.

The use of highly potent immunosuppressive agents has significantly improved the survival rate of both transplant recipients and transplanted kidneys, but the incidence of infection and mortality from infectious complications have also increased. On the one hand, viral infection causes systemic symptoms in the recipient, on the other hand, it often leads to serious damage of important organs such as the transplanted kidney, which adversely affects the long-term survival of the transplanted kidney and the recipient. The following contents mainly explain the characteristics of polyoma virus (PV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), adenovirus (AdV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and other viral infections that affect the function of transplanted kidney.
The protective effects of coffee consumption on multiple health outcomes have been demonstrated. However, the biological pathways that mediate these associations remain unclear. To assess the association between coffee intake and concentrations of key metabolic and inflammatory plasma biomarkers in common chronic diseases, coffee intake, caffeine intake, and decaffeinated intake were investigated for association with 14 plasma biomarkers, including C-peptide, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), IGF-binding protein (IGFBP) 1, IGFBP-3, estrone, total estradiol, free estradiol, total testosterone, free testosterone, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), total adiponectin, high molecular weight (HMW) adiponectin, leptin, C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor 2 (sTNFR-2). The study utilized data from two cohort studies of 15 551 women in the Nurses Health Study and 7 397 men in the Medical Staff Follow-up Study, as well as detailed dietary data provided prior to blood draw, after adjusting for factors such as demographic information, clinical and lifestyle, multiple linear regression was used to calculate percentage differences in biomarker concentrations comparing coffee drinkers and non-drinkers. The results showed that the respondents who drank 4 cups of coffee per day had lower concentrations of C-peptide (8.7%), IGFBP-3 (2.2%), estrone (6.4%), total estradiol (5.7%), free estradiol (8.1%), leptin (6.4%), CRP (16.6%), IL-6 (8.1%), and sTNFR-2 (5.8%) compared to those who did not drink coffee, while the concentrations of SHBG (5.0%), total testosterone (7.3% in women and 5.3% in men), total adiponectin (9.3%), and high molecular adiponectin (17.2%) were higher. The results were largely similar for caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee. The findings suggest that coffee consumption is associated with many plasma biomarkers in metabolic and inflammatory pathways.
A prospective cohort study from the United States reported for the first time the relationship between long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 PUFA) intake and the risk of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The study involved 80 551 postmenopausal women aged 55 to 79 years and with no history of arthritis, recruited between 1993 and 1998, whose intake of n-3 PUFA was assessed by the project team in relation to the risk of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. A total of 22 306 osteoarthritis and 3 348 rheumatoid arthritis were observed after an average of 8 years of follow-up of study subjects. Cox regression model was used to estimate the relationship between dietary n-3 PUFA intake and osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The results showed that there was no correlation between the intake of n-3 PUFA and the total intake of n-3 PUFA and arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The specific results were as follows: the fourth quintile compared with the lowest quintile, osteoarthritisHR(95%CI) is 1.04 (0.99-1.09); rheumatoid arthritisHR(95%CI) was 1.01 (0.90-1.13). In addition, the study also found that there was no association between n-6 PUFA and osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. This project is the earliest and largest study of the relationship between n-3 PUFA intake and arthritis. The findings suggest that there is currently a lack of sufficient evidence to prove the role of the above nutrients on the risk of arthritis.
