National Medical Journal of China was founded in 1915, the same year as the establishment of the Chinese Medical Association. Initially a bilingual Chinese-English journal, its English title was National Medical Journal of China. In 1932, the English section of the journal merged with the English journal China Medical Journal (formerly the China Medical Missionary Journal) and was published under the title Chinese Medical Journal, while the Chinese section continued to be published as National Medical Journal of China, retaining the English title National Medical Journal of China. To this day, articles published in the journal continue to include English author names, corresponding addresses, and rigorous English abstracts.

As the flagship journal of the Chinese Medical Association, National Medical Journal of China has, over the past century since its inception, remained committed to serving its vast membership and medical and healthcare professionals, promoting domestic and international medical academic exchanges, and advancing the medical sciences. The journal comprehensively reports the latest scientific research achievements in Chinese medicine, closely tracks global trends in medical science and technology, integrates theory with practice, and places equal emphasis on advancement and dissemination. It actively promotes new technologies and achievements in the medical and healthcare fields, facilitates the timely exchange of new experiences in disease prevention and treatment, and vigorously disseminates new knowledge in medical science and technology. The journal has played a vital role in enhancing the ideological and professional ethics, medical scientific theories, and practical skills of medical and healthcare personnel across China, driving progress and knowledge innovation in Chinese medical science and technology, and contributing to the prosperity of China's medical science and technology publishing industry.
