Sample size estimation is one of the important tasks in clinical research design stage. If the sample size is too large, it will increase the difficulty of research and waste research resources. If the sample size is too small, it will affect the stability of results, which will not truly reflect the overall population and make it difficult to answer scientific questions accurately. Especially in the study of children, where informed consent is difficult and the research risk is relatively high, a reasonable sample size can ensure that the sample required for the study is sufficient without wasting. The most important thing in the process of sample size estimation is parameter selection and parameter value determination. The following examples illustrate the parameters that need to be considered in the sample size estimation and understand their significance.
In the article "Clinical analysis of 11 cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children associated with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection" published in Chinese Journal of Pediatrics, Volume 62, Issue 1, 2024, page 57, "12 cases of small coronary artery aneurysm (z-value 2.5~<5 mm)" were corrected to "1 case of small coronary artery aneurysm (z-value 2.5~<5 mm)".
