At present, the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (including stroke) in China is on the rise^[1]In 2005, non-communicable diseases (mainly including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases) caused more than 80% of the deaths in China. Cardiovascular deaths are the leading cause of death from non-communicable diseases, accounting for 40% of the total mortality rate. In 2011, the number of deaths from coronary heart disease in China ranked second in the world. According to the World Health Organization, the number of deaths from non-communicable diseases worldwide is predicted to increase by 17% in the next 10 years. By 2030, 52 million lives will be claimed each year. More than 80% of cardiovascular disease and diabetes deaths worldwide will occur in low-middle-income countries. European, American and Japan have experienced decades of comprehensive prevention and control of risk factors, and their mortality rates of cardiovascular diseases have begun to decline. At present, the number of cardiovascular diseases in China reaches 230 million, and nearly 3.5 million people die of cardiovascular diseases every year. China faces enormous challenges from the rapidly increasing prevalence and death toll of cardiovascular diseases.

With the development of angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) techniques, the use of iodine-containing contrast agents is increasingly widespread, and its safe use and rational choice are also increasingly concerned. In view of this, a multi-disciplinary group of clinical experts jointly developed this consensus through a systematic review of existing clinical research evidence and combined with clinical practice experience to guide the standardized use of contrast agents.
