The lung structure is complex, including a variety of epithelial, mesenchymal and endothelial cell niches. Different niches have different responses to injury or disease, which in turn affect the repair process after lung injury. Mild to moderate lung injury can activate alveolar stem cells (AT2) and promote normal alveolar regeneration to restore function; While severe injury causes airway (basal) stem cells to migrate and replace alveolar stem cells, forming injury-induced mesenchymal-epithelial cells, leading to abnormal repair. The study aims to reveal the cellular components involved in injury-induced niche formation and their potential as targets for restoring alveolar structure and function, and to explore the determinants of normal regeneration or abnormal repair of the lung, particularly the regulatory mechanisms by which airway (basal) stem cells compete with alveolar stem cells.
