Mannitol is the most commonly used first-line drug for the treatment of increased intracranial pressure (ICP), and it is widely used in clinical use[1]。 However, due to the different understanding of the pathophysiological mechanism of increased ICP and the pharmacological mechanism of mannitol, irregular use of mannitol is common in clinic, such as unindicated use, careless dose and interval, neglect of monitoring during use, etc., which leads to irrational use of mannitol in clinic and related complications[2]。 Therefore, the Pediatric Neurosurgery Group of the Neurosurgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the Neurocritical Care Management Cooperation Group jointly discussed and wrote the Chinese Expert Consensus on Mannitol Treatment of Increased Intracranial Pressure (referred to as the Consensus), hoping to standardize the use of mannitol through the consensus, avoid abuse and misuse, and improve the rationality, safety and effectiveness of mannitol treatment.
