Seminar on the High-Quality Development of the Chinese Medical Journal Cluster

In January 2026, the Seminar on the High-Quality Development of the Chinese Medical Journal Cluster was held in Beijing. The meeting brought together officials from competent authorities and professional organizations, including the Publishing Bureau of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the China Association for Science and Technology, the China Periodicals Association, and the Chinese Medical Association, as well as leading experts such as Dong Jiahong, Wang Zhenchang, Zhu Lan, and Weng Jianping, and representatives from partner journals of the journal cluster. Participants held in-depth discussions on key topics including journal cluster development, intelligent medical knowledge services, and the construction of high-quality datasets.

At the opening ceremony, He Xiang, Secretary-General of the Chinese Medical Association, delivered a speech in which he highly commended the significant progress made by the journal cluster over the past year. He noted that the Chinese Medical Association would continue to provide resource support for the high-quality development of journals and the cluster, accelerate the transition from “scale expansion” to “quality leadership” and “innovation-driven development,” and promote the shift from “individual journal breakthroughs” to “cluster-based coordination.” He emphasized that the CMA would make every effort to build an integrated digital publishing and knowledge service platform and establish a distinct overall brand identity for the Chinese Medical Journal Cluster, thereby substantially enhancing the global visibility of Chinese medical journals and their participation in international rule-making in medical scholarly publishing. He further pointed out that journal development should take medical humanities as its soul, remain true to its founding mission, and provide value-oriented leadership.

Li Jun, Executive Vice President of the China Periodicals Association, also addressed the opening ceremony. He fully recognized the achievements of the Chinese Medical Association Publishing House in integrated publishing innovation, noting that the Chinese Medical Journal Cluster, through the intensive operation of more than 290 journals, has explored a practical path for the high-quality development of Chinese journals that is both replicable and scalable.

The opening ceremony was moderated by Lv Xiangzheng, Deputy President of the Chinese Medical Association Publishing House. He noted that the meeting served not only as a comprehensive review of the achievements in journal cluster development, but also as a concentrated showcase of innovative practices following the laboratory’s leadership transition, as well as an important opportunity to advance the high-quality development of medical publishing.

Wei Junmin, President, Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Medical Association Publishing House, and Director of the Laboratory, delivered a summary report on the development of the journal cluster. He systematically reviewed the achievements and breakthrough progress made in journal cluster development over the past year.

Gan Ling, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Medical Association Publishing House, provided a detailed interpretation of the Administrative Measures for Member Journals of the Chinese Medical Journal Cluster (Draft for Comment). The document clarifies management rules in three dimensions: membership procedures, resource support, and compliant operation, providing institutional safeguards for the standardized and sustainable development of the cluster.

During the special session on journal cluster development, moderated by Huang Liyang, Project Manager of the Journal Development Department of the Chinese Medical Association Publishing House, the signing ceremony for new member journals and the certificate presentation ceremony for member journals were held in succession. He Xiang, Secretary-General of the Chinese Medical Association, and Wei Junmin, President and Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Medical Association Publishing House, jointly presented certificates to representatives of member journals, marking a new step forward in the brand development of the journal cluster.

Representatives of two member journals delivered presentations. Liu Baiqiu, Director of the Editorial Office of the Macau Journal of Medicine, presented on the “Coordinated Development of Medical Journals in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.” From the perspective of regional collaboration, he outlined the development plans of partner journals, which resonated strongly with participants.

Gao Chao, Director of the Journal Editorial Office of Beijing Hospital, delivered a thematic report titled “Resource Integration and Precision Services: Platform-Enabled Models and Practices for Enhancing the Influence of Academic Journals.” Focusing on resource integration, precision dissemination, and brand building, he shared the development experience of Beijing Hospital’s journal portfolio with the support of the Chinese Medical Journal Cluster platform.

In the Academicians’ Roundtable, Professor Weng Jianping, President of Anhui Medical University, served as moderator. Academician Dong Jiahong from Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, Tsinghua University; Academician Wang Zhenchang from Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University; and Academician Zhu Lan from Peking Union Medical College held an in-depth discussion on “High-Quality Medical Journal Development and the Construction of High-Quality Datasets in Medical Scenarios.” Regarding journal development, the academicians exchanged views on the core role of medical journals, their support for young researchers and scientific innovation, pathways toward internationalization, and the impact of artificial intelligence on academic authority. Regarding dataset development and artificial intelligence, they discussed key issues including the relationship between AI and physicians, the role of journals in data standardization, and the transformation of real-world data, providing forward-looking guidance for the future development of medical journals and the data ecosystem.
