Lung abscess is a distressing disease with a high mortality rate. The treatment has been hitherto unsatisfactory. When the sulfonamides were first introduced, there was naturally great hope that this drug would be effectual in the treatment of pulmonary abscesses, but the results were disappointing. However, the advent of penicillin seems to brighten the outlook of these cases materially. As relatively few reports have appeared in the literature concerning the use of penicillin in the treatment of putrid lung abscess, we are reporting our limited experience in this field.
It is common knowledge that noma (Cancrum oris) is an ominous and most dreadful complication in kala azar not only because of the destruction it causes to the structures of the face, oral cavity and throat, but also because of the high mortality it carries.
In recent years, with the continued advance in the-knowledge of chemotherapy of tuberculosis, an increasing number of clinically useful drugs has appeared. The most important of these are streptomycin, an anti-biotic, and para-amino-salicylic acid, a synthetic drug. While streptomycin may produce serious toxic reactions, para-amino-salicylic acid is outstanding for its relative non-toxicity. With the exception of minor gastro-intestinal disorders, such as nausea, vomiting and occasional diarrhea (1, 2, 4), little has been reported on its clinical toxicity.
The value of thoracoplasty in the treatment of advanced pulmonary tuberculosis has stood the test of time during the past twenty years. Late results, from one to ten years after the operation, from American clinics showed that about sixty per cent of patients were clinically cured and another fifteen to twenty per cent were improved (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). The immediate mortality rate is less than 5% by number of patients. and about 3% by number of operations. These figures are certainly encouraging as compared with the results of treatment without collapse therapy (6, 7) or those following pneumothorax (8, 9). But in spite of this achievement, the number of such operation.s in China is still small, considering the large number of patients suffering from advanced pulmonary tuberculosis. The present.paper is based upon the data compiled from 125 stages of thoracoplasty in 55 patients operated on by the author or his assistants during a four and one-half year period from July, 1944 to December, 1948. Thirty-six cases were treated at the Chungking Central Hospital; 14 cases at the Tientsin Central Hospital, and 5 cases at the Peiping Union Medical College Hospital. No attempt is made to go into the technical aspects of the procedure. The material is analysed with emphasis on the results of the treatment and the various factors concerned in the selection of patients for the operation.
There have been important advances in our knowledge of heart disease in recent decades. Improvement in technics of diagnosis and therapeutics, no doubt, are chiefly responsible for them.
Pregnancy in the rudimentary horn of the uterus is a rare clinical condition. According to Koplowitz in 1929, Maurieau and Vassal reported the first case in 1669. However, Kussmaul claimed that the first case was reported by Dionis in 1681: In 1842, Rokitansky described. What he thought to be the first case of its kind in literature. The total number of cases reported up to date is 191. Kussmaul collected 12 cases in 1859; Sanger, 29 cases in 1884; Kehrer, 82 cases in 1900; and DeLee mentioned only about 100 cases reported by 1916. Humpstone, O. P. described two cases of his own, totalling 146 cases up to 1920. Since that time no further report has been made. From what I could gather from the literature there were only 45 cases reported between 1920 and 1948.
Studies on the time of feeding of Anopheles hyrcanus var. sinensis and anopheles minimus initiated by Dr. M. C. Balfour, were carried out in the vicinity of Chungking in the months of June through November during the period from September 1943 to October 1945.
Although malaria incidence in Chungking (Pahsien) reported by Crook (1) during the period 1934-1937 was very low, a severe epidemic occurred in the vicinity of Chungking in 1940. Since then natural infection has been found in Anopheles hyrcanus var. sinensis by Kan (2) and in sinensis and Anopheles minimus by this laboratory.
Recently, Yen (1) suggested a new differential medium for the isolation of V. cholerae by means of the decolozation of rosalic acid surrounding the colonies. After some attempts to repeat his experiments without much respect.
The common culture medium used for the isolation of enteric pathogenic organisms in routine laboratory if most hospitals in China is the China blue agar plate (1), which has been used for a great many years.
