Most of the febrile patients admitted to the Medical Service of the Peiping Union Medical College Hospital were tested for the presence in their sera agglutinins for E. typhosa "H" and "O", S. paratyphi, S. schottmülleri, S. cholera suis, S. enteriditis, Proteus vulgaris OX19 and Br. melitensis and Br. abortus. The tests were usually repeated until the cause of fever was ascertained.

Abstract
As early as forty years ago, investigators have been interested in the removal of the antigenicity of proteins. Wells (1) found a great decrease in antigenic power of crystalline egg albumin after treatment with sodium hydroxide until little coagulable protein was left, although previously (2) he failed to inactivate the same after prolonged digestion with pepsin and trypsin.
The role of prostitutes in the dissemination of venereal diseases is generally recognized today. Next to complete abolition of prostitution, effective measures for reducing the venereal diseases among the populace. For some years, several cities in China have adopted the policy of compulsory periodic examination of licensed prostitutes.
In 1926 Faust reported on the prevalence of malaria in China and noted that the Min River valley of Central Szechuan was heavily infected. According to Crook's survey of malaria in Szechuan (1939) which included Suifu, Chengtu, Mienchu, Hanchow and Minshan, the spleen index was only 6.1% in Suifu but attained 63.9% in Minshan.
It is common knowledge that now and then recipients of blood transfusion contract malaria, syphilis or relapsing fever even when the most rigid criteria governing the examinations of donors and their blood have been adhered to. Transfusion kala-azar, however, has never been observed before.
