Zheng Hairong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is Vice President of Nanjing University, Researcher at the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Medical Imaging Science and Technology, and Director of the National Innovation Center for Advanced Medical Devices. He serves as a member of the Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Executive Committee Member of the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE), Vice President of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering, and Member of the National Manufacturing Power Strategy Advisory Committee. His research focuses on medical imaging information processing and the development of innovative medical imaging systems and advanced medical devices. Addressing the need for independent innovation in medical imaging technologies, he has made significant contributions to high-resolution magneto-acoustic imaging mechanisms in biological tissues and proposed the theory of implicit regularization-based sparse fast imaging, overcoming critical challenges associated with the slow acquisition speed of magnetic resonance imaging. He led the development and commercialization of China’s first domestically developed 3.0 T and ultra-high-field magnetic resonance imaging systems, breaking the long-standing international technological monopoly in this field. He also proposed new models for accurately calculating acoustic radiation forces in biological environments and invented quantitative elasticity imaging ultrasound systems based on acoustic tweezer manipulation, as well as non-invasive ultrasound neuromodulation devices. As the principal investigator of a national emergency major project, he led his team in developing China’s first domestically produced extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) system for the treatment of critically ill patients with COVID-19. His work has made systematic and significant contributions to the advancement of medical imaging technologies and high-end medical equipment innovation. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed academic papers and holds over 140 granted invention patents. As the first recipient, he received the First Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award (2020) and the Second Prize of the National Technology Invention Award (2017). He has also received numerous prestigious honors, including the China Youth Science and Technology Award, Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Innovation Award, Chen Jiageng Youth Science Award, and National Innovation Award. He was appointed Chief Scientist of the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program) and was awarded the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (2013).
