Liu Shiyuan is Director of the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Naval Medical University (Shanghai Changzheng Hospital). He is a Professor, Chief Physician, and Doctoral Supervisor. He has been recognized as a Leading Talent of Shanghai, an Outstanding Academic Leader of Shanghai, and an Outstanding Talent of the 21st Century in Shanghai. He was honored as one of the “National Renowned Physicians – Outstanding Role Models” (Second Edition), recognized as an Advanced Individual for Supporting the Military and Promoting Civil-Military Integration in Shanghai, and serves as a Deputy to the Huangpu District People’s Congress of Shanghai. Professor Liu currently serves as President of the Asian Society of Thoracic Radiology, Chair of the Radiology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Vice President of the Radiologist Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Chair of the Chinese Medical Imaging AI Industry–Academia–Research–Application Innovation Alliance, Vice Chair of the Second Chinese DICOM Standard Committee, Chair of the Radiology Imaging Database Specialty Committee of the National Health Commission Capacity Building and Continuing Education Center, and former Chair of the Radiology Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association. Professor Liu specializes in thoracic diseases, particularly early lung cancer screening and imaging diagnosis. He established and optimized a series of technical approaches for pulmonary nodule management, improving diagnostic performance by 34%. He completed a large-scale lung cancer screening program involving 14,506 individuals in Shanghai, achieving a pulmonary nodule detection rate of 29.89% and a lung cancer detection rate of 1.23%. By applying multiple quantitative imaging methods, he developed approaches for predicting the invasiveness of pure ground-glass nodules, achieving a sensitivity of 93.74% and a specificity of 92%. He also established several precision prediction models based on imaging characteristics of pulmonary nodules, with a sensitivity of 93.4% and an accuracy of 86.6%. Professor Liu was among the earliest researchers to conduct clinical studies on deep learning-based artificial intelligence models for pulmonary nodules. He developed the first standardized pulmonary nodule annotation criteria in China and established the first national testing database for artificial intelligence products targeting pulmonary nodules. His research achieved diagnostic accuracy rates of 94.74% for early-stage lung cancer and 98.2% for intermediate-to-advanced lung cancer through medical imaging approaches. Professor Liu initiated the establishment of the Chinese Medical Imaging AI Industry–Academia–Research–Application Innovation Alliance. He has led the development of 13 expert consensus statements and clinical guidelines on pulmonary nodules, COVID-19, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and artificial intelligence in medical imaging. He has also led the formulation of two professional association standards, participated in the development of five national standards, and served as Editor-in-Chief of two editions of the Report on the Development of Artificial Intelligence in Chinese Medical Imaging. As the principal investigator, Professor Liu has led and completed two key projects under the National Key Research and Development Program of China, two key projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, four general projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, one key project supported by the National Health Commission, and five major scientific research projects supported by the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission and Health Commission, along with numerous provincial and military research projects. His projects have received a total funding of more than RMB 810 million. Professor Liu has published more than 400 academic papers, including over 80 SCI-indexed articles, with the highest single-paper impact factor reaching 53.276. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of the nationally unified undergraduate textbooks Medical Imaging and Introduction to Medical Imaging. He has also edited 10 additional textbooks and monographs, translated four monographs, served as Deputy Editor of six books, reviewed six monographs, and contributed to 11 professional publications. Professor Liu has received six provincial- or ministerial-level awards and above, including the First Prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award. He has also been granted 18 national invention patents and software copyrights.
