It has often been assumed in this and many other hospitals that adequate treatment of diabetes mellitus requires hospitalization, and that patients with diabetes cannot be properly taken care of in the outpatient department without the establishment of a separate, elaborate diabetic clinic. As a result of this assumption, many diabetics who cannot come into the hospital on account of financial or other difficulties have been turned away or driven from clinic to clinic without satisfaction either to the patient or to the physician. With the view of the possibility of obviating such difficulties for the future, the writer started to treat diabetes in the outpatient clinic about a year ago. Up to the present, altogether twenty patients have been seen, three Russian and seventeen Chinese.

The disturbance caused by alterations of the bladder neck such as those giving rise to hypertrophy of the prostate have been extensively discussed in Europe and America. With the introduction of newer instruments to cope with this condition, urologists have focussed their attention at the vesical neck.

Acute infection of the car, following swimming, may involve either the external auditory canal or the middle ear. In this article we are primarily concerned with infection of the external ear, as that condition in the minds of the laity is known as "Swimmer's Ear", and constitutes by far the one most frequently seen, following swimming in the Shanghai area. While acute or chronic infections of the nose or the throat, the resulting otitis presents no unusual problem.

The intention of the writer of the present article is to raise the question as to whether the large amounts of anti-tetanus serum which it is now customary for makers to suggest and physicians to prescribe are really necessary in the great majority of cases of tetanus.
THE EFFECT OF AGEING UPON KLINE ANTIGENRAPHAEL F. LVOFF

The technical, simplicity of Kline precipitin test for syphilis is the main factor accounting for its rapid and wide recognition. The comparative investigations made by different workers with a view of determining the practical value of the test have definitely established the high degree of reliability and accuracy of it. According to Osmond (1) Heathman (2) Stewart (3) Chargin (4), Eller (5), and Kline (6) the result of this test usually coincides with that obtained in Kahn and Wassermann reactions. The actual agreement between Kline test and Kahn and Wassermann may reach from 77 to 98.5 per cent. This is a sufficiently good testimony for the efficiency of the test. Although Kline test is now considered as a dependable laboratory procedure. Little is known as regards certain practical sides of the test. The question of the stability of the antigen used in Kline test is of some importance for those countries where the supply of antigen can only be obtained from few central laboratories. Kline himself recommended that his antigen should not be used, if older than six months. It is difficult, however, to ascertain on what data such recommendation has been based. One is justified to assume that the antigen kept for a longer time than that stated by Kline will probably be of a satisfactory quality.
STUDIES IN CHRONIC ARSENIC POISONING. III. THE HISTOPATHOLOGY OF THE VISCERA OF GUINEA PIGS EXPOSED TO "MOSQUITO INCENSE" FUMESP. L. LI, CHI-SHIH YANG
CHINESE MEDICAL JOURNAL1935年 49卷 03期
DOI: 10.3760/cma.j.issn.0366-6999.1935.03.106
The pulmonary tissue changes observed in the guinea-pigs subjected to repeated fumigations with the "mosquito incense" as outlined in our previous paper (1), are definite and extensive. It must be pointed out that while we may look upon them as the result of more or less local toxic effects of the poison, arsenic in the form of particles suspended in the smoke, when inhaled into the respiratory tract, can also be absorbed. It is to be expected, therefore, that in the same animals showing lesions in the pulmonary tissues, the result of the absorption of it into the body would be of a sVstematic nature, and that its toxic effects may be demonstrated in the viscera as well.
