With recent advances in microsurgery, total tumor excision via the cranium or sphenoid sinus is possible, broadening the operative indications. Even in tumors within the sella turcica without visual acuity and field disturbance, selective total tumor excision is possible. This not only prevents relapse, bat also preserves the normal Pituitary tissue better, obviating the need for hormone substitution therapy.

Pathologic and microcirculatory changes in the bones of rabbits infected by Staphylococcus aureus infusion into the femoral artery and tibia are studied. Before the animals were killed, they all had bone microangiography. In those with induced bacteremia, the skeletons, joints and soft tissues were infected inducing osteomyelitis, bone abscess, cortex abscess, arthritis and soft tissue abscess. Observations were also made on conditions induced by hematogenic osteomyelitis such as bone marrow inflammatory infiltration and absorption, abscess formation and organization, destruction and hyperplasia and intraosseous blood flow destruction and reconstruction.

This paper presents a correlative roentgen-pathologic study of 90 cases of breast cancer. 67 had roentgenograms of the whole organ and 85 specimen slices (horizontal or vertical to the skin surface) with 62 having both. Of the tumor tissue studied, cancer cells have the highest density, their number and arrangement greatly influence the X-ray mass shadow density and homogeneity. Uneven mass shadow density is an important roentgen sign of malignancy, occurring in 81% of this series.

This article analyzes 157 cases of adnexal tumors found among 300 cases of pelvic masses studied by Grey scale ultrasonography in order to study the efficacy of this mode of examination in differential diagnosis of benign and malignant tumors, particularly its value in diagnosing early ovarian malignancy. The correct diagnoses in benign and malignant lesions are 92.4% and 92.1%. In diagnosis of clinical Stage 1 and 2 ovarian malignancy, accuracy is 80%. Ultrasound is safe, sensitive, harmless and can be used to follow internal structure changes, so it is an available method of diagnosing ovarian malignancy early.

This paper analyzes EEG findings in 52 patients of Wilson's disease seen from 1955 to 1980. 54.7% of our patients had abnormal EEGs. Of a total of 75 tracings 31 were rated as normal, 3 borderline, 28 mildly, 8 moderately and 5 maximally abnormal The abnormal features including generalized or focal slow waves which occurred continuously or paroxysmally and occasional sharp transients were nonspecific. The degree of abnormality is not directly related to the level of ceruloplasmin nor is it correlated with age of onset and duration of illness, but it varies with the severity and course development of disease. With the exception of 1 of 8 asymptomatic siblings of 4 affected families, all seem to have the same degree of EEG (mild) abnormality, as that of their diseased relatives. EEG evaluation appears to be useful in detecting cerebral involvement and treatment assessment.

10 rare cases of retroperitoneal malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) are reported. About 60-70 cases are reported in the world literature and 13 in the Chinese literature. According to the literature, the cases of this series, are classified into 4 types. General type: pleomorphic subtype 2 cases and storiform subtype 4 cases; inflammatory type conforming to the old terms xanthogranuloma (XG): tumor cells with no atypicality 2 cases and tumor cells with atypicality conforming to the old terms malignant xanthogranuloma and xanthosarcoma 2 cases; myxoid and giant cell tumor types, none. The authors point out that the retroperitoneal space is rather large and the nature of vascular endothelium may be altered. Tumor myoangioma-like endothelium with lipid leaking results in inflammatory change masking the true nature of the tumor mass. Although some of these tumors are benign XG histologically, in this location they all end up malignant clinically. As to the histogenesis, as in Case 2 both storiform MFH type and leiomyoma existed in the same tumor mass, this strongly supports the theory that MFH is derived from the primary mesenchymal cells. The treatment and prognosis are discussed.

The normal values of 10 dermatoglyphic parameters in 180 males and 160 females of the Yi nationality are determined and the result compared with the people of Minnesota, USA as well as with some other Chinese nationalities. The frequencies of Yi fingerprint patterns are Lu>W>Lr>A, being similar to that of whites and differing with the Chinese Tu, Sala and Han nationalities except for Hans of Shanghai. The total frequencies of transverse patterns in the Yi are higher than in other Chinese nationalities. White male total fingerprint ridge count is higher than in the female as in most Chinese nationalities, but in the Yi nationality the opposite is true. This indicates that Yi hand dermatoglyphic parameters are somewhat specific.

A method of examining living, intact bone marrow segment and bone marrOw deep structure such as central veins and arterioles microscopically is described. This technic contributes much to the detection of the original marrow architecture, especially the communication between the central vein and sinusoids and the relationship between the central vein and arterioles.

Gastric mucosa cell cycle parameters in 102 patients with different diseases are measured by 3H-TdR autoradiography in vitro incubation, proliferative zones were also observed. The relationship between gastric cancer and precancerous lesions is discussed. It is suggested that the study of cytokinetics may contribute to early gastric carcinoma diagnosis.

Cellular immunity is determined in 81 cases of recurrent herpetic simplex keratitis (HSK) by E-rosette forming count (E-RFC). Their mean E-RFC levels were lower than normal, this almost normalized in 30 treated with transfer factor (TF). Results were satisfactory. The advantages, mechanism and recurrence with TF treatment are presented.
