A new method of determining anti-double strand DNA antibody by blood smears of mice infected with Trypanosoma equiperdum used as a substrate for immunofluorescent technic is described. Sera from 547 persons, including 62 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 68 with other connective tissue diseases (CTD), 288 with miscellaneous diseases, and 129 healthy medical workers and blood donors were determined. The results were all 20 patients with active SLE showed strongly positive reactions; only 4 of 42 patients with inactive SLE showed weakly positive reactions; all other CTD patients except 1 and all patients with miscellaneous diseases as well as healthy controls showed negative reactions. This test demonstrates very good correlation in comparison with the Farr assay and has some advantages over it, such as simplicity of performance, reliability and constancy of results and SLE specificity. seems applicable to the Moreover, the method detection of antinuclear antibody (ANA) under certain conditions. It is of value in diagnosis and follow up of SLE.

This paper reports the iodine metabolism and pituitary-thyroid axis function among the inhabitants of an untreated endemic goiter region in the southeastern part (Heba commune) of Guizhou province. The results of the investigation showed that the urine iodine excretion of the inhabitants in the untreated endemic goiter region was lower than that of those in the normal non-endemic region, a rural commune of Guiyang city and an iodized salt treated endemic region, Shilong commune. The urine iodine excretion was low not only among the goiter patients and cretins but also among the nongoitrous adults and children. Same was with the 24 hr thyroid 131I uptake figures which were higher than normal among the goiter patients and cretins as well as nongoitrous adults and children in Heba commune. It is concluded that in the endemic goiter region, the goiter patients and cretins as well as the nongoitrous adults and children are suffering from iodine deficiency. Studies of pituitary thyroid axis function of the inhabitants in the untreated endemic goiter region, Heba commune, showed basically normal values for serum T3, definitely low values for serum T4 and markedly elevated values for serum TSH. The relationship between low serum T4 and elevated serum TSH was frequently observed among the cretins and the goiter patients although myxedema was rarely manifested. Thus hormonal hypothyroidism was not uncommon among the inhabitants of Heba commune and the term "euthyroidism" should be used with discretion.

Based upon mass screening of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using alpha fetoprotein (AFP) as tumor marker and long term follow-up study, a new concept concerning the natural course of HCC has been developed. Adverse to the previous concept of relative short survival, HCC exists and develops for a relatively long period before symptoms occur. A group of pathologically proven HCC cases receiving non-resectional treatment revealed that the median survival of subclinical HCC was 14 months versus 3 months in clinical HCC. 10 more months should be added from the first, appearance of low but gradually increasing AFP of subclinical HCC, so the natural course of HCC is about 24 months. This relatively long period provides much more opportunity for successful treatment of this grave malignancy if it is detected early.

Changes in heart rate and electrocardiogram were recorded by telemetry in 100 volunteers who were regularly doing taijiquan 太极拳 during the exercise. The change in heart rate is not very marked and no important electrocardiographic changes are recorded. It is thus speculated that the possible beneficial effect of taijiquan on the cardiovascular system cannot be attributed solely to the amount of exercise provided by taijiquan and additional mechanisms must be sought.

This is a report on 60 cases of pneumonia in children treated by traditional Chinese medicine. Of the 60 cases, 18 (30%) recovered in 3-5 days, 33 (55%) in 6-10 days and 9 (15%) in 11-15 days, averaging 7.4 days.

Estrogen receptor (ER) with labeled fluorescence estradiol is determined in 33 samples of colon cancer tissue. ER is positive in 10. Our results are similar to Alford's, but the method we used is simpler and feasible.

The current operative treatment for stricture of the bile ducts at the liver hilum has been anastomosis of the proximal bile duct with a defunctioned limb of the jejunum. Such an operation bypasses a functioning papilla and leaves the proximal biliary system open to possible ascending infection from the intestines. This study is a preliminary report of 5 clinical cases of this type of stricture successfully treated by plastic repair of the bile duct at the hilum without intestinal anastomosis. The functioning papilla, a prerequisite for this operation, prevents ascending infection in the biliary system.
