The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) was created in May 2003. Initially, it included only 350 Journals. As of May 2005, it included more than 1,550 Open Access Journals and more than 70,000 articles. The system includes all academic and research journals, which generally have been peer-reviewed or edited for quality control. They have the characteristics of free, full-text and high-quality, and have high reference value for academic research. Guidelines are managed and supported by multiple organizations and agencies, including Open Society Institute, The National Library of Sweden, SPARC, SPARC Europe, Axiell, EBSCO, INASP and Swedish Library Association, among others. The purpose of DOAJ is to increase the visibility and availability of academic journals, increase the use value and impact of journals, and all content on the homepage of the website is freely available.
